Waking Mama
During the night,
the sound of bare feet pitter pattering
against the wood floor
wakes me.
I feel a little person
crawling between the covers
snuggling in next to me.
Moments later,
much larger feet
come bounding
across the floor
and a still small,
yet much bigger person
dives under the covers,
burrowing into the warmth
under me.
We snuggle,
and nourish,
while the sun rises,
and deep inside me
a third heartbeat
drums out a rhythmic sound,
and we sleep once more.
